A Windows-based Program to Derive Design Rainfall Temporal Patterns For Design Flood Estimation

چکیده
Design flood estimation is often required in engineering practice such as design of hydrologic structures, flood plain management, river ecological studies and flood insurance studies. The national guideline for design flood estimation in Australia known as Australian Rainfall and Runoff (ARR) recommends the Design Event Approach as the preferred method of rainfallbased design flood estimation technique (I. E. Aust., 1987, 1997). This method requires formulation of a design rainfall event and use of a runoff routing model to convert the design rainfall event into the corresponding design streamflow event. A design rainfall event is specified by a rainfall duration, average rainfall intensity of a particular average recurrence interval (ARI) and rainfall temporal pattern. A rainfall temporal pattern gives the proportion of total rainfall in different periods within a given rainfall duration. This paper focuses on the design rainfall temporal patterns.

The intensity –duration –frequency (IDF) curves play most important role in watershed management, flood control and hydraulic design of structures. Conventional method for calculating the IDF curves needs hourly rainfall data in different durations which is not extensively available in many regions. Instead 24-hour precipitation statistics were measured in most rain-gauge stations. In this stud...

The main approach to design flood estimation in Australia is event-based with the use of flood hydrograph models such as RORB, WBNM and URBS the most common practice for estimating design floods via rainfall based approaches. A characteristic of these models is that the routing of rainfall excess is distributed within the catchment, the amount of routing depending on the amount of sub-division ...
متن کاملDerivation of Design Rainfall Temporal Patterns in Australia's Gold Coast Region
Design of water infrastructures requires estimation of design flow which is the runoff that an infrastructure can handle safely. For estimation of this design flow, rainfallrunoff modelling is widely adopted. Temporal pattern (the distribution of rainfall depths over sub-storm durations) is considered to be one of the most critical input variables in the rainfall-runoff modelling. Design tempor...
